George A. Kuntz, age 91, of Shelby, passed away Thursday, July 20, 2017 at Harbor Hospice Poppen Residence in Muskegon. He was born May 11, 1926 in Chicago to George and Charlotte (Karge) Kuntz. George lived in Chicago until the age of sixteen when he moved to Hart.
He married Helen Schoenberg on September 24, 1950. He served in the Army at Fort McCoy in Wisconsin during the Korean War. Following his military service, George returned to Oceana County to live in Shelby. He was employed at DuPont Corporation for twenty-nine years until his retirement.
George was very active in his community. He was a member of Shelby United Methodist Church and served as a trustee. He was a Cub Scout leader and Peanut League coach. He was a member of Gordon Bates Post of the American Legion. George served on the Shelby Fire Department for several decades and was one of the first E.M.T's serving with the Oceana Ambulance Service in Shelby. He also served on the Shelby Village Council. George was always performing odd jobs for friends and enjoyed socializing at the coffee shop.
He is survived by his wife, Helen; his children, Karen (Wayne) Thompson of Norton Shores, George L. Kuntz of Muskegon and Jim Kuntz of Plymouth, MI; and his sisters-in-law, Katie Naghtin of Montague and Barbara Schoenberg of Gilbert, Arizona. He was preceded in death by his mother, Charlotte; father, George; stepfather, Albert Gallo; infant daughter, Diane Marie Kuntz; and his sister, Barbara Kucera.
Visitation is Sunday, July 23rd, 4-6 pm at Harris Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held Monday, July 24th, 11 am at Shelby United Methodist Church with Pastor Anne Riegler officiating. Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Shelby United Methodist Church, 68 E. Third Street, Shelby, MI 49455.
