Oscar Garcia Zuniga, 96, passed away May 20, 2024, peacefully at Harbor Hospice – Poppen Residence. He was born August 23, 1927, at Noriega Ranch, Texas, he was the son of Enrique Zuniga and Manuela Zuniga.
Oscar moved to Rothbury, Michigan and worked for Kurdziel Iron Industry, then moved to Grand Rapids in 1951. He was self-taught in radio and worked for WMIX, WKJR and WYCE. He was buying time on the air to promote the Mexican dances that he was staging in West Michigan, Lansing, Ohio and Indiana. Eventually he was employed at Wyoming Public Schools. He was asked to teach classes and cablecast on the Wyoming Public Schools cable television channel, Channel E and the broadcast from WYCE 88.1FM when it began. Oscar was the driving force behind the school’s application for a radio frequency. He developed El Mundo Musical, which was the only Mexican music show of its kind at that time. He left a legacy behind, and El Mundo Musical still exists today. Oscar loved being a DJ and won several awards. He also enjoyed spending time with family. While on the air he would dedicate songs to his family and friends; that was his way of showing love. Oscar also enjoyed fishing, hunting and was a true Yankee fan.
