On May 7, 2025, surrounded by love at the Poppin House in Muskegon, Michigan, Lucille “Lucy” Alvina Hall DeVries peacefully passed away at the remarkable age of 100. A beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend, Lucy’s life was one of warmth, resilience, humor, and deep connection.
Born on January 3, 1925, in Shelby, Michigan, Lucy was raised on her family’s farm. She experienced loss early in life with the passing of her mother when she was just three years old, yet she carried that early hardship with grace and an unshakable spirit. She would go on to live through a century of incredible change — from the Great Depression and two World Wars to the rise of space travel and modern technology. Through it all, Lucy remained a steady, loving presence to those lucky enough to know her.
Known throughout the community as “Muskegon’s favorite waitress,” Lucy worked many of her younger years alongside her sisters, brightening tables and hearts with her quick wit and radiant smile. But Lucy would tell you that her greatest role — and the one she cherished most — was that of Mom, Aunt, and Grandma.
Lucy married the love of her life, Elmer Hall, on May 10, 1958, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Together they built a life in Muskegon and later returned to Shelby to be closer to family. Elmer’s tragic passing in 1990 left a deep mark, but Lucy carried on with the same strength and joy he had loved in her. She was also previously married to Bob DeVries.
A woman full of life and adventure, Lucy didn’t slow down with age. In her 80s, she was ziplining with her grandson and riding motorcycles with her nephews. She loved garage sales, lunches with her sisters, card games with family, and Tigers baseball. Her favorite game was Yahtzee — always announced with her signature cheer: “Hotsie totsie, bring me a Yahtzee!”
Known affectionately as “Sweet Lucy,” she had an undeniable sweet tooth — from candy and cookies to cake and her all-time favorite, ice cream. She credited her daily dose of ice cream as the secret to her long life.
Lucy was rarely seen without a camera in her hand, capturing thousands of memories for her family — a legacy of love now preserved in photo albums and hearts.
In January of 2025, Lucy celebrated a century of life at a special “We Love Lucy” birthday party filled with laughter, memories, and family — a fitting tribute to a woman who gave so much of herself to those she loved.
Lucy is survived by: her daughter, Janice (Jim) Holden; grandson, Aaron "Mickey"(Jennifer) Hartman; granddaughter, Cari (Troy) Hartman-Noble; great-grandchildren, Andrew, Allyson, and
Shayne Hartman, and Taylor and Kayla Noble. She is also lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and her dear friend Karen Simmons.
She is preceded in death by: her parents, Henry and Henrietta (Stier) Brischke; husbands, Elmer Hall and Bob DeVries; siblings, Bill (Betty) Brischke, Florence (George) Hallack, Marian (Harry) DeBoef, Lorraine Coon, and Sally (Don) Mauk.
Lucy lived a life full of love, laughter, and legacy. Her stories, her joy, and her sweet tooth will live on in all of us who were lucky enough to be part of her world.
