Jean Ann Smith, age 85, of Montague, went to be with her Lord and Savior at home surrounded by her loved ones on Thursday, January 25, 2018. She was born October 29, 1932 in Muskegon, the daughter of Henry and Wilma Shafer Mitchell. Jean grew up in the Sackrider area east of Hart. She moved to Muskegon after graduating from Hart High School. She married Lawrence H. Smith in 1951 and lived in Muskegon for several years. Jean also lived near Holton for thirty years and Shelby for twenty years before moving to Montague in 2014.
Jean enjoyed reading, music, doing puzzles and the lake. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Jean attended Shelby Road Baptist Church when she lived in Shelby.
She is survived by her children, Deborah (Lyle) Gleason of Hesperia, Cheryl (Dan) Boutell of Whitehall, Lawrence Smith (and Mary) of Scotts, Michigan, Janine (Doug) Eitniear of New Era, Robert (Michelle) Smith of Newaygo and Rebecca Smith of Muskegon; grandchildren, Stephanie Gleason (Elizabeth Owens), Rachel (Robert) Rumsey, Eric (Melissa) Eitniear, Adam Gleason, Stephen (Valerie) Gleason, Ryan Boutell, Julie (Brad) Mulder, Maximilian Smith, Nicole Smith, Jacob Eitniear, Ian Eitniear, Dylan Eitniear, Lindsay Eitniear, Melissa (Rob) Bishop, Elizabeth Smith and Megan (Rodney) Kosheba; twenty-one great-grandchildren; sister-in-law and special friend, Peg Mitchell of Montague and sister-in-law, Ruth Mitchell of Indiana. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lawrence; and her brothers, Robert, Raymond and David Mitchell.
There will be no services for Jean at this time. A graveside service will be held in the spring at Elbridge Township Cemetery on a date to be announced.
