Edith L. Matney, age 95, of Shelby, passed away Friday, June 21, 2019 at the Oceana County Medical Care Facility in Hart. She was born September 9, 1923 in Leavitt Township, the daughter of Winfield and Helen (Tookey) Mitteer, Sr.
Edith was raised in Elbridge Township. She roomed in Hart in order to attend high school. Edith graduated from Hart High School and went on to County Normal for teacher training. Her first year of teaching was in Elbridge. She taught in several one-room schools. She also taught at Blooming Valley, Ferry, Rothbury and others. She retired from Montague Schools after a career spanning thirty-three years.
She married Arlo Matney on April 19, 1950. He passed away on August 15, 2015. The Matneys were very active in the Melody Mates Square Dancing Club. They were members of the charter group and attended national square dancing conventions in Hawaii and western states. They also enjoyed bus tours with the Nobles Gad Abouts. They wintered in Florida for nearly thirty years and enjoyed the cottage at Stony Lake which they purchased in 1956.
Mrs. Matney is survived by her children, Curtis (Faye) Trott and Suzanne VanderNaalt; her grandchildren, Aaron Trott (Wilma Hornbrook), Jennifer Trott, Carrie (Don) Houseman, Tony (Heather) Nania, Michael (Debra) VanderNaalt, David VanderNaalt and Steven (Tara) VanderNaalt; nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandsons. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Winfield Mitteer II, Benjamin Mitteer, and Arland Mitteer, her sister, Margaret Wrinkle and son-in-law, Robert VanderNaalt.
Visitation is Wednesday, June 26th, 1 pm at Harris Funeral Home in Shelby with the memorial service to follow at 2 pm also at the funeral home with Pastor Paulette Zoulek officiating. Memorials to the Crystal Valley Care Fund, P.O. Box 451, Hart, Michigan 49420 are appreciated. Interment will be in Hart Cemetery.
