Dorothy E. (Miller) Houghton

Dorothy E. Houghton, age 94, of Ferry Township, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at the Oceana County Medical Care Facility in Hart.  She was born at home on the family farm in Ferry to Loran A. and A. Louise (Trull) Miller on February 2, 1924.  

Dorothy graduated from Hesperia High School and then went to County Normal in Hart.  She completed her education at Western Michigan University in 1960.  Dorothy  was a teacher for thirty-eight and one-half years beginning with one-room schools in Oceana County to her retirement from Montague Public Schools.

She is survived by her daughters, Brenda Johnson (Dave Crothers) of Hart and Marsha Jansen of Fountain; her grandchildren, Richard (Michele) Johnson, Jr., Cathi Abbatoy (Jeff Maginity), Heather (Jeremy) Hallack and Arthur (Kim) Masco; twelve great-grandchildren; three great-great-granddaughters; many nieces and nephews; and her sister-in-law, Margaret (Fred) Richter.  Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, and her siblings, Burton Miller, Ruth Baxter, Anna Belle Prowant and Hazel Hren, her grandson, Jarrod Johnson and son-in-law, James Jansen.  

Visitation is Wednesday, December 5th, 6-8 pm and Thursday, December 6th, 1 pm until the funeral service at 2 pm at Harris Funeral Home in Shelby with Pastor Paul Hane officiating.  Interment will be in Ferry Township Cemetery.
