Obituary

Donald C. Riggs, age 80, of Shelby, passed away Saturday, November 3, 2018 at the Oceana County Medical  Care Facility in Hart.  He was born December 1, 1937 in Shelby to Lewis and Dorothy (Easton) Riggs.


During high school, Don worked stock and carry out for Brown's Grocery Store in Shelby. He also helped his Uncle Art deliver bread to stores.  Don graduated from Shelby High School in 1955 and joined the United States Air Force in January of 1956.  He served four years, mostly in Chataroux, France.  He returned home and worked for Shade Tree Service.


Don married Beverly Buffum on October 8, 1960.  He was employed at DuPont in Montague for eight years and Standard Gas Station for Ben Cober and then for his dad when he owned the station.  Don was employed at Stokely-VanCamp in Hart before going to work for the United States Post Office.  He worked as a clerk and carrier for twenty-five years before suffering a severe stroke in 1996.  During his time at the post office, Don also did part-time custodial work at Shelby Congregational United Church of Christ for about ten years.


He was an avid hunter and fisherman.  Don did woodworking as a hobby before his stroke.  He enjoyed trips to Florida, time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.


He is survived by his wife, Beverly; his daughters, Ginger (Dennis) Williams and Melanie (Steven) Brimmer; his grandchildren, Barbie (Jim) Edwards, Robert Hawkins, Freedom "Anita" Walters (and Eric Leahy) and Amber (Steve) Bohunicky; great-grandchildren, Janessa, Jesse, Love, Xander, Bailey, Havyn, Peyton and Juniper; sisters, Phyllis Moak, Marlene (Patrick) White and Diane (Brian) Spray; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his granddaughter, Jasmine Walters.


Visitation is Friday, November 9th, 10 am until the memorial service at 11 am at Shelby Congregational United Church of Christ.  Pastor Ruth Fitzgerald will officiate.  A luncheon will follow.  Interment will be in Hart Cemetery.  Please consider Shelby Congregational UCC, 51 E.
