Daniel F. Babinec, 94, of Shelby passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family Wednesday, March 13, 2019. He was born August 3, 1924 in Shelby, Michigan to John and Anna (Kubic) Babinec. Dan left high school early, joining the Army to fight in WWll. Upon honorable discharge, he was awarded the Theater Ribbons with 2 Bronze Stars among other special recognitions. Dan and Peggy Ash met at the Shelby skating rink, fell in love, and got married on June 14, 1952.
Dan worked at Shaw Walker for 37 1/2 years. After he retired, he worked for Peterson Farms until he was 90 years old.
Dan was a Cub Scout Leader for 6 years. He also enjoyed gardening, farming, playing cards, and was actively involved at Shelby United Church of Christ. As much as Dan took pride in his work, being a good neighbor and friend were always qualities he admired. His greatest joy in life were his wife and family.
Daniel is survived by his wife of 66 years Peggy (Ash) Babinec; daughter, Karen (Babinec) and Robert Donker; sons, John (Jennifer) Babinec, James (Amy) Babinec and Douglas (Sinka) Babinec; grandchildren, Rebecca (Donker) and Collin Towersey, Tyler Babinec, Anna Babinec, Matthew (Courtney) Donker, Pierce Babinec, and Julia Babinec; brother, Carl Babinec; as well as many nieces and nephews. Dan was preceded in death by his parents John and Anna Babinec, as well as nine brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be at the Shelby Congregational United Church of Christ, 51 E 3rd Street, Shelby, MI from 10-11 am on Saturday, March 16, 2019. A memorial service will take place immediately following visitation at 11 am in the church sanctuary. A time of fellowship and refreshments will be provided immediately following the service.
