Betty Jane DeRooy Obituary

Betty Jane DeRooy of Shelby passed away January 28, 2022 at home. She was born October 18, 1947 in Arkansas to William (Bill) and Iva Mae (Austin) Cole. She moved to the Shelby area when she was 12.

Betty married Anthony (Tony) DeRooy June 17, 1967 in Hart. She worked for the Oceana County Medical Care Facility in the kitchen department. Betty enjoyed playing bingo, working on puzzles and sudoku, watching western shows, going to yard sales and crocheting, especially making afghans. She wouldn't give up on things and could be quite stubborn at times. Betty was a private person who would rather listen than talk, but when she did she would "shoot ya straight".

Betty is survived by her children, Delbert "Peaser" Hawkins, Anthony "Tony" (Casey) DeRooy, Cearrie DeRooy and Tonya Burmeiser; brother, Dennis Cole; sister, Patsy VanDoren; twelve grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Wilburn, Dillie and Donnie Cole, and sister Juanita Franke.

Graveside services will be in the spring.

Arrangements are by Harris Funeral Home, Shelby. www.harrisfhome.com.
