Theresa E. Stone (Breshears, Usiak), of Fruitport, Michigan, passed away peacefully at Robbinswood Assisted Living on August 8, 2026.
Theresa was born on June 23, 1937, in Shelby Township (Blooming Valley), Michigan, to Paul and Irene (Clark) Usiak. She attended Blooming Valley and Piper Schools before graduating from Shelby High School in 1955. She continued her education at Kalamazoo College, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in 1957.
On April 18, 1958, Theresa married Walter Breshears. She later married Cecil Stone on August 15, 1964. Theresa and Cecil made their home in Fruitport, where they built a life rooted in faith, family, and hard work. It was through square dancing that Theresa met Cecil, beginning a love story that would become an important part of her life.
Theresa had a sunny disposition that never seemed to fade, no matter what life placed in front of her. She was gentle, mild-tempered, and kind-hearted, and those who knew her would be hard-pressed to remember a time when they ever saw her truly angry. Theresa had a way of meeting life with grace and finding joy in the people and moments around her.
Her faith was the cornerstone of her life. Theresa was a devoted member of her church community and, come hell or high water, she could be counted on to be at Sunday service. She especially enjoyed her involvement with the Lake Harbor United Methodist Church singing nuns choir, traveling throughout Michigan and sharing her love of music with others.
Above all else, Theresa was devoted to her family. She was a loving and dedicated mother who took great pride in her children and cherished the time she spent with them. She was also a proud grandmother and was especially delighted by her five great-grandchildren, who brought her tremendous happiness. Her family was at the center of her heart, and she gave them a lifetime of love, encouragement, and unwavering devotion.
Theresa also had a particular fondness for cats; many, many cats. They were a constant source of companionship and joy throughout her life and were just one more reflection of the tender and generous heart she carried with her.
Theresa is survived by her children, Cecil (Teresa) Stone of Florida, Lewis (Ruth) Stone of Hart, Theresa Ortega of Shelby, Sherri Loss of Muskegon, and Jeff Stone of Grand Rapids; her grandchildren, Sheena, Helen, Brian, Martin, Hollywood, and Stephanie; and her great-grandchildren, Kaitlynn, Brianna, Aiden, Sean, and Isaiah, whom she loved dearly. She is also survived by her sisters, Donna Near and Sheryl (Ray) Sallgren, and her sister-in-law Barbara Usiak.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Irene Usiak; her husbands, Walter Breshears and Cecil Stone; her brother, Paul Usiak; her son, Paul Breshears; and her brother-in-law, Jim Near.
Theresa was loved by everyone fortunate enough to know her and will be deeply missed. She will be remembered for her gentle spirit, unwavering faith, sunny disposition, generous heart, and the deep love she had for her family. She lived her life with kindness and quiet strength, always making room for the people—and cats—she loved.
