Obituary

Roger Clark Umstead, 88, passed away Septber 7, 2024. He was born October 15, 1935, in Muskegon, the son of Buster and Maxine (Bohland) Umstead.

Roger was born and raised in Muskegon, where he met and married Shirley Beliose. In 1960, he relocated his family to California and enlisted in the Army National Guard, receiving an honorable discharge in 1962.

Shortly after, Roger and his family moved to Shelby, where he established his home and continued to raise his children. A skilled journeyman carpenter, Roger was a proud member of Carpenters Local 100. In a generous act of kindness, he took in three of Shirley's siblings when tragedy struck her family.

Roger had a passion for hosting pig roasts, bringing together family and friends for joyous gatherings. He enjoyed playing pinochle and bridge, and he was an avid enthusiast of outdoor activities such as snowmobiling and dune buggi.

Shirley, his beloved wife, passed away in 1991. Roger later found love again with Nita Sobers. Together, they delighted in traveling in their motor home to Florida and exploring bluegrass festivals. In the winter, they enjoyed puzzling together.

Nita proved to be a true blessing to Roger and his children, enriching their lives with her warmth and companionship.

Roger is survived by: his children, Rick, Bobby, and Kathy; and longtime companion, Nita Sobers.

Roger was preceded in death by: his wife, Shirley; children, Nancy Gillette and Tom.
