Robert “Bob” Lee Kendra, 71, of Rothbury, passed away Tuesday, August 25, 2026. He was born July 29, 1955, in Muskegon, the son of Stanley and Betty (Stidham) Kendra.

Bob grew up in Fruitport, Michigan, where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing sports. He was a prolific storyteller, often reminiscing about his youth and the many bird-hunting adventures he shared with his father and brothers.

Bob was a gypsy at heart, never caring much about material things and always enjoying life to the fullest. He traveled throughout his life, living at various times in Florida, Illinois, and Arizona, while primarily calling Michigan home. Along the way, he made lifelong friendships and collected countless stories and memories.

Bob enjoyed a good debate and paid attention to politics and sports. He usually had an opinion about most things. He could be crass, direct, and quick-witted, but he also had a remarkable way of always seeming to be in the right place at the right time, ready to jump into action to help a perfect stranger. Whether rescuing a neighbor boy who had been buried alive, performing lifesaving measures on someone choking during dinner, or coming upon a car wreck, Bob never hesitated to help.

He was always available for a motorcycle ride or a good two-track cruise, looking for animals along the way.

In his later years, Bob devoted himself to his grandson, teaching him and experiencing as many things together as possible. He was the most dependable and punctual person anyone could ask for—especially when food was involved.

Bob lived life on his own terms, leaving behind a trail of stories, laughter, strong opinions, unexpected adventures, and a lot of people who were better off for having known him. He had a way of making an impression—sometimes with a joke, sometimes with an argument, and sometimes simply by showing up when someone needed him. To those who loved him, Bob was more than a father, grandfather, brother, partner, and friend; he was someone they could count on.

His absence will leave a hole in many lives, but he certainly didn’t leave quietly. He left behind stories to tell, memories to laugh about, lessons to remember, and more than a few opinions that will probably continue to be debated for years to come.

Bob is survived by his daughter, Kirbey (Mike) Kendra-Dubois; step-son, Christopher (Emily) Stark; grandchildren, Jameson Dubois, Xzabier Stark, Mason Stark, and Parker Stark; sister, Judy (Erie) Toney; brother, Ronald Kendra; girlfriend, Becky Pilcher; his favorite ex-ol’ lady, Constance Stark; and many close friends, cousins, and nephews.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Betty; daughter, Lisa Kendra; and brother, James Kendra.

A time of celebration will take place from 12 noon until 2 pm, Saturday, September 12, 2026, at Harris Funeral Home, 267 N. Michigan Avenue, Shelby, Michigan 49455.
