Obituary

Joseph "Joe" Arnold Merrill, 63, passed away on August 25, 2025. He was born on February 23, 1962, in Hart, the son of Arnold and Shirley (Feister) Merrill.

Joe had a lifelong love for the open road, which he carried into his career as an over-the-road truck driver until a brain tumor diagnosis in 2000. His passion for the road went hand in hand with his love of speed. Whether racing dirt bikes, riding his motorcycle, or tearing across the snow on his snowmobile, Joe found joy and freedom in every ride.

Above all, Joe was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grandfather. He will be remembered for his strength, kindness, and his unwavering willingness to help family and friends.

Joe is survived by: his wife, Kay Merrill of Montague; children, Joseph (Heather) Merrill Jr. of Whitehall, Krista (John) Huls of Shelby, and Keith (Charlotte) Merrill of Whitehall; grandchildren, Julianna Merrill, Wesley Huls, Caleb Huls, Malachi Huls, Vienna Huls, Alonna Merrill, Jax Merill, Colin Gafford, and Kayla Gafford; siblings, Vicky Merrill, Curtis Merrill, Matthew (Stephanie) Merrill, Scott (Melissa) Merrill, and Nancy (Jeff) McLouth; as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Joe was preceded in death by: his parents, Arnold and Shirley (Feister) Merrill; mother-in-law, Sue Smith; and daughter, Kimberly Snyder.

A Celebration of Life will be held September 18, 2025, at the New Era Wedding Barn, 4701 Stoney Lake Road, New Era, MI 49446. A receiving of friends will take place from 4-5 PM, with a service and luncheon to follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Crystal Valley Care Fund, PO Box 451 Hart, MI 49420, in Joe's honor.
