Obituary

James Elmer Olson, 79, of Shelby, died unexpectantly January 29, 2026.  He was born October 11, 1946 in Shelby, the son of Milton and Nora (Calcutt) Olson.

A lifelong resident of Shelby, James was a 1964 graduate of Shelby High School. He honorably served his country as a radio operator in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, where he was awarded the Purple Heart for his bravery and sacrifice. Upon returning home, James began a dedicated career at Howmet, from which he retired in 2005.

Jim was happiest when he was outdoors, tending to his gardens, caring for his livestock, or producing maple syrup alongside loved ones. He was a generous soul who loved hosting friends at the farm and sharing his lifelong gardening expertise. His family was his greatest pride; he cherished every visit with his granddaughters and looked forward to hunting deer with Ryan and Adam. Jim leaves behind a legacy of service, hard work, and kindness that will be long remembered by the Shelby community.

James is survived by: his children, Jason Olson, Melanie (Dana) Hoblitzell; grandchildren; Gwen (Tyler) Cozzi, Bailey Hoblitzell, Ryan Olson, Adam Olson; great granddaughter Ruth Cozzi; sister, Patricia Smitts.

James was preceded in death by: his parents, Milton and Nora; brother, Milton C. Olson Jr.

Cremation has taken place; a celebration of life is planned for this coming summer.

Harris Funeral Home, in Shelby, is in charge of arrangements.
