Gordon Smith, 79, of Grand Rapids, passed away Sunday, August 23, 2026, at Faith Hospice at Trillium Woods peacefully after a brief and courageous battle with lymphoma. He was born January 22, 1947, in Shelby, the son of Gilbert and Helen (Bradley) Smith. His passing came much sooner than his family and loved ones ever expected, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, encouragement, friendship, and love that will not soon be forgotten.

Gordon married his high school sweetheart, Nancy Sanford, and together they moved to Wayland, where he dedicated 33 years to teaching elementary school-aged children. Gordon as beloved by his students, colleagues, friends, and community. He had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel welcome and valued, and he was perhaps best known for his gift of befriending anyone he met. His kindness, encouragement, and generosity touched countless lives.

Gordon loved Jesus, being near the water and cherished every opportunity to spend time with his children and grandchildren. He also had a lifelong appreciation for Mustang cars, a passion that brought him joy.

Gordon is survived by: his children, Chris Smith; Jennifer (Randy) Barlow; and Robert (Amber) Smith; grandchildren, Elijah Barlow, Gabriel Barlow, Hailey Smith, Nick Smith, and Nevaeh Smith.

Gordon was preceded in death by: his beloved wife, Nancy Smith; parents, Gilbert and Helen Smith; sister, Elaine Oehrli; and brother, Doug Smith.

Gordon leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness that will continue to be carried forward by all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Memorial Services will be conducted at 10 am, Saturday, September 5, 2026 at Shelby Congregational United Church of Christ, 51 E. Third Street, Shelby, Michigan 49455, with Chaplain Randy Barlow officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
