Fred Emery
Knapp
November 22, 1955 – January 22, 2026
Fred Emery Knapp, 70, of Montague, died unexpectedly on Thursday, January 22, 2026. Born November 22, 1955, in Shelby, Fred was the son of Arthur Sr. and Emily (Emery) Knapp.
Fred had a passion for motorcycles since childhood, and that love stayed with him throughout his life. He enjoyed countless bike trips with friends and family who rode, relishing every mile and every new experience. As Fred became a more "mature" rider, he graduated from his motorcycle to a trike but never lost his enthusiasm for the open road, continuing to explore the United States on his rides.
Fred was also a master at drywall and plaster finishing, which he did full time for about 11 years. He was an amazing artist when it came to finishing ceilings and making a house feel like a Home, a craft he continued to practice even after moving on to other work. At one point, Fred also worked at Skipper's Landing Marina, where he made many connections and friendships that lasted a lifetime. In 1986, Fred began working at Howmet, where he became a key employee and stayed with the company until his retirement in 2017. His dedication and work ethic earned the respect of his colleagues and those who knew him well.
He spent countless hours in his famous garage woodworking, crafting special pieces for the people he cared about. Fred enjoyed skiing and loved teaching his children to ski, as well as introducing so many young family friends to the joy of the sport—whether it was water skiing or gliding down the snowy slopes of Michigan. Skiing was something that clearly brought him real happiness, especially when he could share it with others.
Fred was generous with his time, always willing to help friends and family whenever they needed it. If you needed the shirt off his back, Fred would give it without a second thought. He will be remembered for his loyalty, kindness, and unwavering honesty. Fred was also an animal lover and his little dog Lola owned his heart.
Fred is survived by: the love his life Cindy (Fetterley) Knapp; children, Meghan (Justin) Snider, Andrew (Bridget) Knapp; grandchildren, Meah, Nathan (Kaylee), Clayton, Raylynn, Reed, Corbin, Matthew, and Lainey; siblings including three brothers, Gary, Art and Rod; one sister, Sue.
Fred was proceeded in death by: his parents, Arthur Sr. and Emily Knapp; granddaughter, Ava VanderStelt.
Per Fred's wishes, cremation has taken place, no services are scheduled at this time. A private
celebration of life yet to come.
