Juanita M. Klapp, age 86, of Shelby, passed away Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at the Oceana County Medical Care Facility in Hart. She was born September 29, 1931 in Shelby, the daughter of Alfred and Naomi (Jarvis) Schmieding. Juanita was raised in Blooming Valley east of Shelby. She married Alvin Klapp on February 9, 1952. They lived in Wisconsin during her husband's time in the Army and returned to Michigan, to live in Muskegon from 1952 to 1953. They settled in Shelby in 1953.
Juanita was a long-time member of Shelby United Methodist Church and had taught Sunday School. She enjoyed gardening, reading, crossword puzzles and games. In her younger days she picked cherries, asparagus and pickles. Having grown up on a farm, she always enjoyed outside work.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin on April 4, 2016. She is survived by her children, Rebecca (Bruce) Pienton of Grand Rapids, Kathleen (James) Wyns of Shelby, and Nicholas (Lynn) Klapp of Porterville, California; her sister, Leota Klapp of Shelby; her brother, Donald (Cathy) Schmieding of Shelby; grandchildren, Andy (Shana) Wyns, Bradley (Marie) Pienton, Lucy (Andy) Lund, Elizabeth (Andrey) Marchena, Andrew Klapp, and Audrey (Josh) Wilson; great-grandchildren, Eli Marchena, David Wilson, Claire Wilson, and Isaac Pienton; stepgrandchildren, Jonathan (Heather) Zimmerman, Elizabeth (Blake) Stice and Joe (Clair) Zimmerman; stepgreat-grandchildren, Arreyl Carpenter and Jasmine Mauer; and six stepgreat-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 2nd, 10 am at Shelby United Methodist Church with the funeral service to follow on Saturday, 11 am also at the church with Pastor Anne Riegler officiating. Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Shelby. Please consider Shelby United Methodist Church, 68 E. Third Street, Shelby, MI 49455 as a memorial.
