Garland V. "Gar" Hoffman, age 81, of Newaygo, passed away Tuesday, January 16, 2018 in Grand Rapids. He was born November 29, 1936 in Branch, the son of Paul and Laurell (Jones) Hoffman. He was a 1955 graduate of Scottville High School. Gar served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1963. He was stationed in Germany. He married Connie (Flory) on October 18, 1968. They lived in the Montague and Rothbury area until 1979 when they moved to Grand Rapids. The Hoffman's lived there until 1998 when they became full-time RVers for five years. Since then they have lived in Cadillac, Grand Rapids and currently in Newaygo.
Gar was retired after working for many years at Jenison Public Schools in maintenance. He was a member of the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Connie; his children, Robert (Emily) Hoffman, Shelley (Donald) Shain and James Hoffman; ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandson, Ryan Hoffman; and daughter-in-law, Jackie Hoffman.
Visitation will be held Saturday, January 20th beginning at 1 pm until the memorial service at 2 pm at Harris Funeral Home in Shelby with Pastor Mark Baker officiating. Interment will take place in Mount Hope Cemetery in Shelby in the spring. Memorials for family expenses are appreciated.
