Charles W. Harris, Sr., age 94, of Ferry Township, passed away Thursday, February 1, 2018 at home. He was born December 18, 1923 in Milan, Michigan, the son of William "Buck" Harris and Eleanor (DeRose) Harris.
He married Alma J. (Lightfoot) on December 22, 1952. He purchased his farmhouse in Ferry in 1951. Charles worked in the Detroit area for many years. He traveled back and forth from Detroit to live in Ferry at different times during his working career. He settled permanently in Ferry in 1981. He had been employed at Great Lakes Steel in Ecorse for seventeen years, at Continental Motors from 1951 to 1955, at Dana in River Rouge and retired from Demco in Detroit. Charles was a World War II Navy veteran. He served for six years, including his time on the USS Nashville in the South Pacific.
He is survived by his wife, Alma; his children, Linda (Joe) Santi, Susan Sanders, Charles (Brenda) Harris, Jr., Connie (Rex) Johnson, Clifford (Kimberly) Harris, and Craigery Harris; thirteen grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Karen Ann Harris, his brother, Jack Harris and five grandchildren.
A graveside service with military honors will held Saturday, April 28, 2018, 3:30 pm at North Ferry Cemetery, 3400 E. Buchanan Road, Hesperia, MI (take 144th Avenue then go east on Buchanan Road).
