Bobby "Bob" Kay, age 83, of Shelby passed away Sunday, November 18, 2018 at the Oceana County Medical Care Facility in Hart. Bob was born June 19, 1935 in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas to Leonard and Pearl (Smith) Kay.
Bob lived in Arkansas until moving to Shelby at the age of eighteen. He married Janice Dillingham on April 9, 1960. She passed away February 21, 2013. Bob was employed as a mechanic for Shelby Public Schools and later with the Village of Shelby Department of Public Works. He also was employed at Cheevers, Inc. before retirement. Bob had also owned a snowmobile sales and service business along with a family operated pizza restaurant.
He was a volunteer fireman with the Shelby-Benona Fire Department. Bob will be missed for his sense of humor and will be fondly remembered for his mechanical "fix it" ability. He enjoyed always being able to work on things.
He is survived by his children, Dan Near, Robert Near, Jodi (Eric) Chapman, Tami (Paul) Garrison, Lori (Mark) Trautner and Blair (Leslie) Kay; his grandchildren, Brandon (Autumn) Prus, Zack (Ashley) Chapman, Seth Chapman, Casey Trautner, Madison Trautner, Riley Trautner, Bailey Kay, Austin Kay, Amber (Jim) Whitmer, Jeremy Near and Brandy Near; great-grandchildren, Alivia Chapman, Grace Chapman, Kinleigh Prus, Madelyn Whitmer, Sara Near and Katie Near; brothers, Leon (Cheryl) Kay and Terry (Ellen) Kay; sisters, Linda Brooks-Petro and Sharon (Louis) Robbins; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, Bob was preceded in death by his father, Leonard, his mother, Pearl (Smith) Kay; his stepmother, Pearl (Philput) Kay, and his sister, Nellie "Mae" Crossno.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 24th, 2 pm at Harris Funeral Home in Shelby. Interment will be in Hart Cemetery at a later date. Memorials for family expenses are appreciated.
